Benchmark Details

Computer: Pentium 166Mhz with 32 Megs RAM and 1.6 Gig. IDE drive.
Global search and replace consists of changing all occurrences of "lines" to "lines."
Test file has one occurrence per line; each line is about 50 characters long:

This is a moderately nice long line with # xxxxx

Many editors can handle 2 megabyte text files with reasonable speed. Very few editors can edit 20 megabyte files. Only VEDIT can realistically edit 100 megabyte and larger files.
